Marketing Acts as a ‘Motor’ to Drive Financial Results
Coca-Cola recently increased digital marketing spend targeting Gen Z from less than 30% to over 60% of the total media spend (2019 to present). Despite increased marketing spend partially offsetting Q3 margins, CEO James Quincey insists it acts as a "motor for growth."
Our Take:
Gen Z only makes up 20.6% of the US population, but Coca-Cola knows the value in targeting this generation more than the other generations combined. They understand that since Gen Z holds $360 billion in disposable income, they're a critical audience to invest in for the long-term health of the brand.
Marketing is a marathon, not a short sprint. The immediate "offset margins" must be weighed against the long-term growth sparked by effective marketing. Brands like Coca-Cola have proven time and again that the gains down the road from smart marketing campaigns far outweigh temporary dips in a single quarter's profits. Savvy marketers keep their eyes on the horizon and understand short-term sacrifices will fuel long-term success.
