Happy September! After a short break from our marketing digest over the summer, we’re excited to get back into the swing of things (pun intended) with this blog about the Savannah Bananas, a semi-pro baseball team that went from regular league games to a national sensation. Their organic marketing strategy is one to watch, as they gained millions of followers (and diehard fans) in just a few years with NO MARKETING BUDGET. Read about the Bananas, their marketing success, and how you can apply their strategies to your campaigns, and be sure to subscribe to our monthly digest if you haven’t already.

If you’ve been on social media over the last few years, chances are you caught a glimpse of the Savannah Bananas, an out-of-the-ordinary baseball team that made its way into the hearts of millions. 4.4 million Instagram followers, to be exact, and they grew that following with no marketing budget. They focused on organic reach and fan-first dedication to engage their target audience and keep them wanting more, to the tune of an estimated $77 million in revenue in 2025 alone. Let’s explore the origin of the Savannah Bananas, their rise in popularity, and how you can use similar strategies to succeed with your marketing efforts.

Taking a Look at the Savannah Bananas’ Marketing Strategy

Ready to take your low-budget marketing strategy to the next level? Try some of the Savannah Bananas’ philosophies so you can reach your audience in brand-new ways:

  • “Fans First” Dedication: The team is there to entertain, building customer experiences that last a lifetime. Before people even hit their seats, the entertainment starts in the parking lot. And, fans are interacting with players face-to-face, with high-fives and autographs.
  • Organic Social Approach: They pay attention to what’s working on social media, and take their own approach to it, acting on viral trends or incorporating celebrity appearances into their games.
  • User-Generated Content: The team doesn’t have to ask fans to post about them on social media, they just naturally do it. When you go to a baseball game where people are walking on stilts and breakdancing, you’ll want to tell your friends about it. Create experiences that people can’t help but share about.
  • Lean Into Your Uniqueness: Find out what sets your company and product apart, and speak to it with everything you’ve got. Don’t be afraid to take a chance, you might find the new best thing.

Let’s dive deeper into how they used these strategies to their advantage.

How the Savannah Bananas Went from Semi-Pro Baseball Players to Powerhouse Entertainers

The Savannah Bananas entered the semi-pro baseball scene in 2016, competing as part of the Coastal Plain League’s West Division, a collegiate summer league where baseball was (mostly) played the way your grandpa did. In 2018, however, they began playing non-league exhibition games under the “Banana Ball” rule book, introducing twists on traditional baseball norms. Banana Ball rules encourage fan entertainment over scoring, including a two-hour time limit, scoreboards counting innings won rather than runs scored, no walks, no bunts, and best of all, if a fan in the stands catches a foul ball, the batter is out.

In spring of 2020, the team started posting on TikTok, featuring lighthearted videos of the team dancing between innings or batters donned in costumes stepping up to the plate. Their content skyrocketed, and what started as fun TikTok dances transformed into full-fledged performances.

How the Savannah Bananas Found Their Rhythm

The Savannah Bananas’ popularity sparked with their first viral video. The players incorporated a trending TikTok dance into the pitchers windup.

One dance changed everything 🕺🏾 In our organization, everything starts with an idea. While many of our ideas flop, some can make a bigger impact than we ever imagined. Three years ago, this was one of those ideas, as we decided to roll the dice with an in game dance into a pitch. It worked and led to now hundreds of unique in game dances and over a billion views. Idea iteration is the number one key to creating our live experience and our consistent social content. We only learn by doing and trying out new ideas…as we never know what the next big idea could be!

The video quickly reached millions and millions of views and sparked new ideas for the team to try. Now, if you scroll through their social media accounts, you’ll find countless videos of players lip-syncing to popular songs, performing choreographed dances, and even partnering with celebrities to continue reaching and engaging their audience. It’s almost impossible to get a ticket to one of their games, and they’ve become a place where baseball fans and musical theater fans come together to enjoy a fun, lighthearted experience.

Now, when people try out for the team, they’re considered for their skills on the field as well as their passion for social media and influencer marketing. And to this day, they’ve spent zero dollars on marketing, taking an organic approach to get in front of their audience.

What started as a fun team in a college league transformed into a full-fledged league of their own, with teams popping up all over the country to compete. They tour across the nation, popping up at various MLB stadiums to entertain new audiences.

You don’t need to have a giant marketing budget to be successful. Use the resources you have, and explore marketing channels to see how your audience reacts. Remember: the most important thing is to take the leap. If you have an idea and feel like it will resonate, try it out! It might spark new ideas and take you down a road you never expected.
